Forever Tango 2007 Tour

Forever Tango History

Forever Tango opened in San Francisco in 1994 for 92 weeks before moving on to Broadway in New York in June 1997 to popular and critical acclaim. The Broadway production garnered nominations for a Tony and four New York Drama Desk awards. The 2000 touring show (click images below for zoomed program scans) energized the Dallas Tango community. Several dancers from the show have further affected the Dallas community as visiting teachers and mentors.

Carlos Gavito and Marcela Durán were featured in the original Broadway production and the touring show in Dallas in 2000 and gave a workshop at Pavadita. Gavito died in 2005. Marcela is scheduled to perform in the 2007 show in Dallas.

Diego diFalco and Carolina Zokalski appeared in the original show on Broadway, but not in the 2000 show in Dallas. Since 2003 they have been regulars at Fandango in Austin during Thanksgiving holidays, and they gave a workshop in Dallas in April 2006. Diego told me he almost didn't attend the Tony awards because he didn't think a drama award was any big deal for a dancer- choreographer. He soon learned a Tony nomination is actually a very big deal. Holding his father's bandoneon, Diego models a shirt in a Forever Tango inspired fashion spread in the Fall 2000 Nordstrom catalogue.

Miriam Larici appeared in the original Broadway production and stayed with the show for 10 years, eventually joined in the cast by her present partner Hugo Patyn. The photo of Miriam posing with an oversized bandoneon may have accounted for much of the show's popularity. Hugo and Miriam gave a workshop in Dallas in March 2007.

Guillermo Merlo appeared in the original Broadway production. We know him as the other half of Fernanda Ghi. Guillermo and Fernanda wowed Dallas tangueros at the 2003 Las Vegas Tango Valentine Weekend in Dallas and other workshops since. They joined the Fandango staff in 2005.

Oscar Mandagarán who appeared in the Dallas tour in 2000 gave a workshop in Dallas with Georgina Vargas in 2007.

JorgeTorres gave a workshop during the troupe's stay in Dallas for the 2007 tour.

Mariela Franganillo and Cesar Coelho appeared in various early productions of the show and offered a workshop in Dallas in 2002. Here's a steamy shot of Cesar with Miriam Larici. Cesar was in the Dallas 2000 show, but not Miriam nor Mariela.
